Kevin Spacey as Francis Underwood

When I first saw the poster for this show, I was initially unimpressed and unsure if I would  give it the time of day. But let me tell you how I got every bit of my life and can not wait for season 2 . After running out of things to watch on Netflix I just decided to be brave and watch the first episode. I mean you  can not truly form an opinion on something if you have yet to experience it and I am glad I did.

Francis “Frank” Underwood (Kevin Spacey) is an ambitious Democratic congressman and House Majority Whip. Following his assistance in ensuring the election of President Garrett Walker (Michael Gill), Underwood is informed by Chief of Staff Linda Vasquez (Sakina Jaffrey) that the existing agreement to appoint him Secretary of State will not be honored. Furious at Walker’s betrayal, Underwood and his wife Claire (Robin Wright), the head of a large not-for-profit, begin seeking out pawns in a protracted political war against Walker. Soon brought into the fray are troubled Congressman Peter Russo (Corey Stoll) and Zoe Barnes (Kate Mara), a young political reporter for the Washington Herald – a fictitious newspaper.

Favorite Character:
Claire Underwood.  I can’t imagine being obsessed with any other character in this movie. She is not your typical politicians wife, who sits around the house oblivious in the happenings around her. Claire is the person doing the happenings and even plotting with her husband to make sure they equally get what the want and need. Quite simply she is a bad ass bitch.

Least Favorite Character:
Zoe Barnes. I just have a real hard time trying to connect with someone who brazenly does not  have and regard for her actions. What I mean by that is she lacks respect: for herself and for other people around her. She is more focused on ensuring she makes a name for herself, but lacks the decency to thank those who help her get to where she wants to be. And whether she is sleeping with Francis or her reporter boyfriend Lucas, her goal is to get unjustly  ahead and I find that abhorrently disheartening.

Favorite Episode:
Chapter Five. House of Cards is strategic puzzle. To complete it you need all the pieces. In this case its extremely hard to just try and chose a specific episode that I enjoy more so than the rest. But Chapter five is when all of the pieces started falling in to place. With David Russo, spiraling out of control and Zoe being played like a pawn.

 Final Verdict:
House of Cards is darkly synical in attempting to understand the dynamics of human behavior. Francis has manage to take something he considers to be a lost as well as a betrayal and turn it into a win; becoming the Vice President of the United States. And he accomplished this by being acutely aware of the decisions and actions of other people, and how they may benefit him not matter the cost.  Now if that isn’t mind blowingly beautiful, I don’t know what is.
